On the first weekend in August, alongside the Brixton Splash Festival, Jacob Joyce will be curating a new exhibition, at our venue, under the name Silkworm. Silkworm’s second exhibition will be exploring West African folklore and particularly the old Yoruba God’s through whom sacred places, processes and organic forms are represented by their own divinity known as an Orisha. Each Orisha is said to be an element of God, Mountains, Rivers, Storms, Trees, Technology, Passageways and learning from your mistakes are just a few of the forces that are attributed and worshipped as Orisha.

Silkworm has themed this eclectic event around appeasing the Old Yoruba Gods through interactive sculpture, environmental craft, music, journalistic photography, poetry, painting and many other provocative processes. Each sculpture, performance and piece of art, from a multitude of artists, has been chosen to represent an Orisha or a belief that stems from Yoruba culture. 

Silkworm hopes that, by introducing Artist to the Yoruba Pantheon and asking the artists involved to explore this rich tapestry of ancient beliefs, all will find inspiration to create an engaging atomistic exhibition; bringing together different takes and feelings to create an exciting whole.
